Ingredients Needed for Air Fryer BBQ Chicken
- Chicken Breasts. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are great for this recipe, but you can easily swap them for chicken thighs, tenders, drumsticks, or wings.
- BBQ Sauce. Your favorite barbecue sauce is key here. Use a tangy store-bought option or homemade BBQ sauce for added customization.
- Brown Sugar. Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the smoky and spicy flavors.
- Paprika. Smoked paprika is ideal for adding depth and that hint of barbecue flavor.
- Chili Powder. Brings mild heat and earthy tones to the seasoning mix.
- Garlic Powder. Enhances the savory profile of the spice rub.
- Ground Pepper. Adds a subtle peppery kick; adjust to taste.
- Salt. Essential for seasoning and bringing out the chicken’s natural flavors.
- Cayenne Pepper (optional). Perfect for those who love a little extra spice.
- Olive Oil. Helps the spices adhere to the chicken and keeps it moist during cooking.

How to Make Air Fryer BBQ Chicken
- Start by trimming any excess fat from the chicken breasts and patting them dry with paper towels. For even cooking, use a meat mallet to pound the chicken to an even thickness.

- In a small bowl, combine the spice rub ingredients: brown sugar, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, ground pepper, salt, and optional cayenne pepper. Rub this seasoning mix all over both sides of the chicken pieces.

- Preheat your air fryer to 350°F for about 5 minutes. Spray the air fryer basket with non-stick spray and place the chicken in a single layer. Cook for 7-9 minutes, then flip the chicken and cook for another 7-9 minutes, or until the internal temperature at the thickest part of the chicken reaches 165°F.

- Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the air fryer and baste it generously with your favorite barbecue sauce. Let it rest for 2-3 minutes before serving to lock in all the juices.

FAQs
Absolutely! Bone-in pieces like drumsticks or thighs work beautifully. Just increase the cook time slightly and always check the internal temperature for doneness.
Pounding the chicken for even thickness and patting it dry with paper towels before seasoning helps lock in moisture. Don’t forget to let it rest after cooking!
While it’s optional, olive oil helps the spices stick better to the chicken and ensures a juicy texture. If you’re looking for alternatives, melted butter or avocado oil will also work.
You can, but you’ll need to adjust the cook time and thaw the chicken slightly before seasoning for the best results.
Go with your favorite! Whether it’s a smoky homemade BBQ sauce, a tangy store-bought variety, or even a spiced-up honey barbecue blend, the flavor is entirely up to you.
Storage & Freezing
Storage: Keep leftover air fryer BBQ chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Use a shallow container to maintain freshness and prevent sauce from sticking to the lid.
Freezing: To freeze, wrap each chicken piece individually in aluminum foil or plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag. They’ll stay good for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
Reheating: For the best results, reheat the chicken in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes. This helps maintain the crispy edges and moist interior without drying it out.
Make Ahead: Season and prepare the chicken ahead of time, then store it in the fridge, uncooked, for up to 24 hours. Air fry just before serving for a fresh, hot meal.

Substitutions & Variations
- Chicken Pieces. Swap chicken breasts for thighs, tenders, or drumsticks for variety. Cooking times will vary slightly.
- BBQ Sauce. Experiment with different flavors like honey barbecue, spicy BBQ, or even a bourbon-infused sauce for a fun twist.
- Spice Mix. Add onion powder or smoked paprika to enhance the rub. Skip cayenne if you prefer mild flavors.
- Oil-Free Option. Instead of olive oil, use a spritz of non-stick cooking spray to coat the chicken lightly.
- Low-Sugar Option. Use a sugar-free BBQ sauce and replace brown sugar with a natural sweetener like stevia or monk fruit.
Pro Tips
- Preheat for Success. Preheating the air fryer ensures even cooking and that golden-brown finish we all love. Don’t skip this step!
- Check the Temperature. Always use a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature. Chicken should reach 165°F at its thickest part to be safely cooked and stay juicy.
- Rest, Rest, Rest! Letting the chicken rest for a few minutes after cooking keeps it tender and juicy while locking in all that smoky BBQ goodness.
What to Serve With It. Pair your air fryer BBQ chicken with classic sides like creamy pasta salad, buttery corn on the cob, or a refreshing coleslaw. For a lighter option, a crisp green salad does the trick!

I had not thought to cook it we with an air fryer thruought the whole process. I pressure cooked bone in thighs for 12 min and 15 min NR. I drained the broth and put the thighs in a basket on a trivet and placed the chicken in the basket and spread sauce on it. I think I set the temp of my Mealthy Air Fryer lid for 375 degrees for 7 min
