Ingredients Needed for Homemade Fig Jam Recipe

    • Fresh Figs. The star of the show! Use ripe figs like Black Mission or Brown Turkey for a naturally sweet flavor. If you don’t have fresh figs, dried figs can work if you rehydrate them in warm water.
    • Honey. Adds natural sweetness and depth of flavor. You can also substitute with maple syrup for a different twist.
    • Granulated Sugar. Helps to preserve the jam and balance the sweetness. Adjust the amount based on your taste preferences or skip it for a lower-sugar version.
    • Water. Helps to soften the figs and blend all the ingredients smoothly.
    • Orange Juice. Provides a bright, citrusy note that complements the sweetness of the figs perfectly. Lemon juice can also work here.
    • Orange Zest. Adds a burst of orange flavor and a touch of sophistication to the jam.
    • Vanilla Extract (optional). For added warmth and a subtle sweetness that makes the jam extra indulgent.

How to Make Fresh Fig Jam Recipe

    1. Start by washing your fresh figs thoroughly and removing the stems. If you're using Black Mission, Brown Turkey, or any other fig variety, they should be soft and ripe for the best flavor. Slice them into quarters to make blending easier.
    2. For a smooth jam, toss your chopped figs into a food processor and blend to your desired consistency. If you prefer a chunkier texture, you can mash the figs with a potato masher or an immersion blender. Either way, the goal is to break them down enough to create a thick, jam-like consistency while leaving a little texture if that's what you like.

    1. Now, for the fun part! In a medium saucepan, combine the fig puree with honey, granulated sugar, water, and orange juice. Add your wide strips of orange zest for that extra burst of flavor.
    2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Once it starts bubbling, reduce the heat to a simmer and let it cook for about 10-13 minutes. This allows the mixture to thicken as the steam evaporates. Don’t forget to stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

    1. Once the jam has reached a thick, spreadable consistency (you can test by dragging your spoon across the bottom of the pan; if the gap fills slowly, you’re good!), stir in the optional vanilla extract for a little extra magic. Let it simmer for another minute or two before removing from the heat.
    2. Pour your delicious homemade fig jam into sterilized mason jars. This recipe makes about 2 cups of jam, perfect for keeping some for yourself and gifting the rest!

    FAQs

Can I use dried figs if fresh ones aren’t available?

Yes! Simply rehydrate dried figs by soaking them in warm water for about 20 minutes before using them in the recipe.

Do I have to add sugar?

You can adjust the amount of sugar based on your taste. If you prefer a less sweet jam, feel free to reduce the sugar or even use alternatives like honey or maple syrup.

How long does homemade fig jam last?

Properly stored in a sterilized jar, your fig jam can last for several months in the pantry. If you open a jar, refrigerate it, and it should stay fresh for a couple of weeks.

    Can I freeze fig jam?

Yes, fig jam freezes well. Be sure to leave some room at the top of your jars for expansion during freezing.

    Storage & Freezing

Storage: Once your fig jam has cooled down, transfer it to sterilized mason jars or any airtight container. If you’re not canning it for long-term storage, place it directly in the refrigerator, where it will stay fresh for up to 2-3 weeks. Make sure to keep the jars tightly sealed to prevent any air from getting in and drying out your jam.

Freezing: Fig jam freezes beautifully, making it a great option if you want to save some for later. Simply spoon the cooled jam into freezer-safe containers, leaving a little room at the top to allow for expansion as it freezes. Seal the container tightly and pop it in the freezer, where it can last up to six months. To use, just thaw it overnight in the fridge and enjoy as fresh as the day you made it.

Make Ahead: Want to get a jump on your fig jam for an upcoming event or holiday? You can easily make this jam ahead of time and store it in the fridge or freezer until you’re ready to serve. It’s a great make-ahead option for gifting during fig season or to have on hand for last-minute gatherings.

    Substitutions & Variations

    • If you’re not a fan of honey, swap it with maple syrup or agave nectar for a different but equally delicious flavor profile.
    • For a deeper flavor, you can use brown sugar instead of white. It’ll add a subtle molasses note that pairs beautifully with the figs.
    • Lemon juice works just as well as orange if you want a sharper citrus kick. You can even experiment with a splash of balsamic vinegar for a more savory note.
    • If you want to add some warmth but don’t have vanilla extract on hand, try a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. For something fancier, throw in a whole vanilla bean.
    • If fresh figs aren’t in season, use dried figs. Just rehydrate them in warm water before using, and you’re good to go.

    Pro Tips

    • The riper the figs, the sweeter and more flavorful your jam will be. If your figs are still a bit firm, leave them at room temperature for a day or two to soften up.
    • Fig jam can be as sweet or as subtle as you like. Start with less sugar, taste as it simmers, and add more if needed. Remember, the flavors will intensify as the jam cools, so don’t overdo it on the sugar at the start.
    • Don’t be afraid to get creative! Add a cinnamon stick while cooking for a cozy, spiced jam, or toss in some fresh thyme for a savory twist. The combination of figs and herbs works surprisingly well, especially on a cheese board.
    • Pair this jam with creamy goat cheese, brie, or sharp cheddar on a cheese board. It also makes an amazing topping for ice cream, or spread it over a toasted baguette for a sweet-and-savory snack. You can even use it as a glaze for roasted meats like pork or chicken. The possibilities are endless!
