Ingredients Needed for Air Fryer Flour Tortilla Bowls
- Flour Tortillas - These form the base of your bowls. You can use either a burrito size flour tortilla or a taco-sized one, depending on how large you want your bowls to be.
- Avocado Cooking Spray - This helps the tortillas become crispy and golden brown without adding too much oil. You can substitute it with any other cooking spray if needed.
- Grated Cheddar Cheese - Grated (optional): Adding cheese to your tortilla bowls gives them a delicious, melty interior. This step is optional but highly recommended for cheese lovers.
How to Make Air Fryer Taco Bowls
- Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees F degrees for about 4 minutes. Choose a medium-sized metal bowl and a smaller metal bowl that nests inside it. Alternatively, you can create a mold using multiple layers of aluminum foil shaped around an existing bowl.
- Lightly spray both sides of the tortilla with avocado cooking spray, ensuring they are well-coated. Place the tortilla inside the larger metal bowl and fold the ruffled sides to conform the tortilla to the bowl shape.
- Place a smaller bowl on top of the tortilla to hold it in place.
- Place the tortilla in the bowl mold into a preheated air fryer and cook at 350 degrees F for 3 minutes.
- Carefully remove the inner bowl and air fry the tortilla for an additional 2 minutes to crisp up the inside.
- Remove the outer bowl, place the tortilla bowl back in the air fryer upside down, and air fry for another 2 minutes to crisp up the outside.
- Remove the tortilla bowl from the air fryer and allow it to cool and harden.

Cheese Tortilla Bowls
- To make a cheese tortilla bowl, add ¼ cup of grated cheddar cheese to the inside of the tortilla bowl after the bowl has been cooked, and air fry for 1 minute to melt the cheese. You could also use the residual heat of the air fryer to melt the cheese, but it will take a bit longer.
Alternate Method
- Another way to make tortilla bowls, instead of using a smaller bowl to make a mold, is to press a ramakin down into the center of the tortilla in the larger bowl so that it indents the tortilla to hold it in place.
- Then, remove the ramakin and place the tortilla in the metal bowl inside the air fryer. Air fry for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F.
- Remove the bowl, flip the tortilla upside down, and air fry for another 2 minutes to crisp up the outside. Then remove the tortilla bowl from the air fryer and allow it to cool and harden.
FAQs
Yes, corn tortillas can be used for a different flavor and texture, but they may require a slightly longer cooking time.
You can use any cooking spray or lightly brush the tortillas with a neutral oil like vegetable or canola oil.
Use smaller tortillas and appropriately sized bowls to create smaller versions of the tortilla bowls.
Storage & Freezing
Storage: To keep your tortilla bowls fresh, store them in an airtight container or a ZipLoc bag. Make sure they are completely cooled before storing to prevent moisture from making them soggy.
Freezing: If you need to make a large batch ahead of time, you can freeze the tortilla bowls. Place the cooled bowls in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. To use, simply thaw at room temperature or reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp them up.
Reheating: Reheat the bowls in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 2-3 minutes to restore their crispiness. Avoid using the microwave, as it can make them soft and chewy.
Substitutions & Variations
- Use corn tortillas instead of flour for a gluten-free option.
- For the cheese tortilla bowls, try different types of cheese like Monterey Jack, mozzarella, or a Mexican blend for variety.
- Add a sprinkle of taco seasoning or chili powder on the tortillas before air frying for an extra flavor boost.
- Use smaller tortillas to create mini tortilla bowls for appetizers or smaller portions.
Pro Tips
- Make sure to use fresh, pliable tortillas that will fold easily into the bowl shape. Older tortillas may crack or break.
- When placing tortillas in the air fryer, make sure they don't overlap. This ensures even cooking and crispiness on all sides.
- Get creative with different bowl shapes by using various sizes of bowls or molds. You can also try making rectangular or square bowls for a different look.
- Air fryers can vary, so keep an eye on your tortilla bowls to avoid burning. Check them frequently, especially during the final few minutes of the cooking time.
