Ingredients Needed for Figs in a Blanket
- Figs. Fresh figs are the star of this recipe, bringing natural sweetness and a soft texture. Choose your favorite variety, like Sierra or Black Mission figs.
- Crescent sheet. This flaky dough wraps around the figs, providing a buttery crunch. If you can't find crescent dough, you can substitute puff pastry for an equally delicious result.
- Cream cheese. The creamy texture balances the sweetness of the figs and adds richness. Feel free to use mascarpone if you prefer a milder taste.
- Goat cheese. Tangy and flavorful, it contrasts beautifully with the figs. If goat cheese isn’t your thing, try blue cheese or even a soft brie.
- Honey. Drizzled into the filling, it adds extra sweetness and caramelizes during baking.
- Orange zest and juice. These bring a pop of brightness, balancing out the richness of the cheeses.
- Egg wash. A mix of egg and water helps give your pastries that beautiful golden-brown finish.
- Poppy seeds. These add a touch of crunch and a subtle nutty flavor on top of the pastries.

How to Make Figs in a Blanket
- Start by washing the fresh figs and removing their stems. Slice each fig in half and set them aside.
- In a small pot, combine the honey, orange juice, orange zest, and water, then bring this mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low then transfer figs to the pot and simmer for about 7-8 minutes until they become soft and infused with all that sweet, citrusy goodness.

- While the figs cool, mix the softened cream cheese and goat cheese in a small bowl until smooth. The combination of these cheeses creates a rich, creamy filling that pairs perfectly with the figs' sweetness. Set this mixture aside.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out your crescent sheet (or sheet of puff pastry) on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into 12 long strips, then slice each one in half, giving you 24 strips.

- Place a small dollop or teaspoon of goat cheese mixture on each fig half, place fig half on one end of pastry strip, then roll pastry strip around the fig half, sealing the cheese inside. Make sure the seam side is down to prevent them from unwrapping during baking.
- Arrange the wrapped figs on the prepared baking sheet.

- Use a pastry brush to brush top of each pastry blanket with egg wash for that golden-brown finish.

- Sprinkle a few poppy seeds on top for extra texture.
- Bake pastries for 12-13 minutes in the preheated 350°F degree oven, until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.

FAQs
Fresh figs are ideal for this recipe because they’re juicier and softer, but you can use dried figs if needed. Just soak them in warm water first to rehydrate them a bit.
If you’re not a fan of goat cheese, try blue cheese, brie, or even manchego for a different flavor twist.
Yes! You can assemble the figs in the pastry a few hours ahead and refrigerate. When you're ready, just bake them fresh before serving.
It's better to freeze them before baking. Assemble them, freeze on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake them straight from the freezer—just add a few more minutes to the cooking time.
Make sure the figs are cooled and slightly dried after simmering in the syrup before wrapping them in the pastry. This helps keep the pastry crisp.

Storage & Freezing
Storage: Once baked, store any leftover Figs in a Blanket in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one day. If you need to keep them longer, place them in the refrigerator for up to three days. Make sure they’re completely cooled before storing to maintain their flaky texture.
Freezing: You can freeze these before or after baking! To freeze before baking, assemble the figs, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and freeze until solid. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. When ready to bake, pop them in the oven straight from the freezer—just add a few extra minutes to the cooking time. If you freeze them after baking, allow them to cool completely, then freeze them in a single layer before transferring them to a container.
Reheating: To reheat already baked Figs in a Blanket, place them in a 350°F oven for about 5-7 minutes until warmed through and crispy again.
Make Ahead: Prepare the figs and cheese mixture in advance, then assemble and refrigerate them up to a day before baking. This makes them perfect for planning ahead for dinner parties or gatherings.

Substitutions & Variations
- You can substitute dried figs for fresh ones—just rehydrate them in warm water before using.
- Puff pastry is an excellent alternative to crescent dough for a flakier texture, or try phyllo dough for extra crispness.
- If you prefer a milder cheese, swap goat cheese with mascarpone, or use blue cheese for a bolder flavor.
- Replace poppy seeds with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning for a different texture.
- If you want a different sweetness, maple syrup or agave nectar works great in place of honey.
- Add a kick of heat by sprinkling black pepper or red pepper flakes into the cheese mixture or on top before baking.

Pro Tips
- Working with cold crescent dough or puff pastry makes it easier to handle and helps the pastries bake up nice and flaky. If the dough starts to soften as you assemble the figs, just pop it in the fridge for a few minutes to firm up.
- A little cheese goes a long way! Stick to about ½ teaspoon per fig half to avoid too much filling spilling out. You want a nice balance of fig, cheese, and pastry in every bite.
- The secret to that golden-brown finish is a good egg wash. Be sure to brush the tops of your wrapped figs generously before baking. This not only gives them that beautiful sheen but also adds a nice crispness to the pastry.
- Serve these with my festive Sweet, Tart, and Tasty Cranberry Relish Recipe, a balsamic vinegar glaze, or a drizzle of honey for a sweet touch! They also pair wonderfully with a charcuterie board featuring manchego cheese, blue cheese, or your favorite cheese selection, and fresh fruits like grapes and pears. Add a glass of red wine, and you’ve got a winning combination!
