How to Cook White Rice in the Instant Pot
Making rice in the Instant Pot is super simple. The Step by Step directions are in the recipe card below. But the steps are easy.
- Use 1:1 ¼ Ratio Water to Rice
- Rinse Rice
- Add Water and Rice to Instant Pot
- Set to Manual / Pressure Cook for 6 minutes and allow a 10 minute Natural Release
- Turn Instant Pot off
- Fluff Rice with Fork

To Rinse or Not Rinse?
There are many reasons to rinse your rise from rinsing off the extra starches, and dirt that may be mixed with the rice. Some feel you need to rinse your rice to remove impurities and arsenic. Regardless of the reasons I've always been taught to wash the ingredients I put in my mouth and rice is no different.
To wash or rinse rice I place rice in a bowl and add cool water. I swish the water around in the rice and then pour off the water. I will do this a number of times until the water runs clear. It's a really simple step that I feel is important.
However, feel free to make the choice yourself and throwing the rice right into the pot. The recipe still works very well.
How to Avoid Mushy Rice
Mushy rice happens when the ratio of water to rice is not perfect. Many in the Instant Pot / Pressure Cooking community like a 1:1 ratio of rice to water. But I prefer a 1: 1 ¼ ratio. 1 Cup Rice to 1 ¼ Cup Water or liquid. This has always given me the best success.
Cooking Time is also important. Over cooking or under cooking can leave you with rice you prefer not to eat. And different varieties of rice require different cooking times.
Always fluff your rice! Fluffing rice is simple. Use a fork to gently lift the rice and separate right after cooking. It also helps to turn the Instant Pot off after the cook and natural pressure release has ended. The Keep Warm setting keeps heat on the bottom of the rice which will make the rice stick to the pot.

How much rice can you make in your Instant Pot
How much you can make is determined by the size of the Instant Pot. A smaller pot won’t make as much as a larger one but keep in mind this simple tip.
Don’t put more than half a liner’s worth of water and rice n the pot. This is because the rice will double in size as it cooks! Overfilling it could be disastrous and messy.
Can you cook 1 cup of rice in the Instant Pot?
If you’re using the inner pot of your Instant Pot then you should use a minimum of 1 cup’s worth of rice. If you plan on cooking less than that then a pot in pot method would work better.
Cooking 1 cup of rice in the Instant Pot is completely doable and easy. Your Instant Pot will cook it at a nice low temperature and give you a great yield of cooked rice.

How to clean the Instant Pot Liner
After cooking rice the liner has stuck cooked rice all over it. Don't panic!
- I remove all the rice, place the liner in the sink and quickly add hot water.
- Just let it soak a few minutes while you finish preparing dinner. Or better yet, while you enjoy dinner.
- After dinner rinse the water out and with a sponge and dish soap clean the pot. The sticky rice will wash away.

I love making my rice in the IP now. I do use chicken broth and I add butter when done. I do the 1 cup rice to 1 1/4 cups of broth. I used to do 1 to 1 but your way works better. I make this a lot esp when cooking salmon or chicken which we eat a lot. Thanks so much for all your wonderful recipes.
