I have always loved a Black Forrest Dessert with rich chocolate topped with creamy whipped cream and a dollop of cherry pie filling. Chocolate and Cherry is a combination made in heaven. It was natural progression to try a Black Forest Brownie. It's much easier than making a traditional cake without missing out on those rich and delicious bites.

When serving my family I love the presentation of making Black Forest Brownies. The sheet pan is beautiful and I drool over how good it will taste until I can take that first bite. You tell me, doesn't this look wonderful?

To take it a step further, I've made it with our family favorite Texas Sheet Cake Recipe that we affectionally call "Bow Wow Woofies". Haha, yes I know the name is absurd but most moms can relate to how it was named and it stuck. Here we are 40+ years later and even my kids know what to call them.

How Texas Sheet Cake became Bow Wow Woofies

My mom was was making Texas Sheet Cake one day while I was little. I'm sure the day was hectic, dirty dishes in the sink and likely no idea what was for dinner that night. Regardless my mom was the taxi driver to dance lessons, soccer practices and anywhere else we needed to go. Just about every mom can relate.

It was evident that my mom was making a treat, a chocolatey treat at that. My brother kept bugging her and asking questions and finally asked "What are you making?". Now, as young children will, they are oblivious to the ovbious and wasn't able to infer what was happening. My mom, was exhausted, tired and in a rush and said "I'm making Bow Wow Woofies! It's Ginger's Birthday Cake". Ginger was our little dog.

To a young child that answer make PERFECT sense. And the name stuck! So welcome to our family tradition of Bow Wow Woofies. And to clarify, no we didn't give the dog any, it's chocolate which is not healthy for dogs. 😉

How to make Black Forest Brownie

This recipe is mixed in a large sauce pan over medium heat. Yes, I know it seems strange but it really does end up be fairly simple. Just follow along, you won't regret it.

    Whipping Cream

Add a dollop of whipping cream on each brownie and top with a spoonful of Cherry Pie Filling

    How to make Buttermilk

Often times I don't have buttermilk on hand in the fridge. Really, it's okay. Did you know you can make your own buttermilk to use in recipes easily? You can! At 1 ½ teaspoon Vinegar into a ½ cup measuring cup. Add milk and allow to sit for 10+ minutes. It will thicken and curdle. Perfect to use in recipes.

Traditionally a Black Forrest Cake Dessert is a rich dark chocolate cake that is drizzled in a cherry liquor and topped with cherry filled whipping cream. I have of course adapted this recipe to be a bit more family friendly and easy to make. I think it's pretty darn good and the plate is always empty which tells me it's a winner recipe.

Can you Freeze Black Forest Brownie

Yes, you can freeze the brownie portion very easily. Make and frost the brownie and then cover and seal to freeze. When you are ready to serve. Remove from freezer and allow to thaw. Add whipping cream and cherry on top and serve.

How to Store Black Forest Brownie

These brownies should be stored in the refrigerator once the whipped topping is placed. Or add whipped topping as served and store brownies covered on the counter.

Can you make ahead of time

This recipe is perfect to make a head of time. Brownies can be made and frosted with chocolate frosting up to a month early. Then add whipping cream and cherries on top when ready to serve. Delish!

Now that you know how Texas Sheet Cake got it's name, and how much I adore Black Forest Dessert I hope you will make this simple Brownie Recipe and tag @devourdinner on social media. I'd love to see what you make!
