Ingredient Shopping List
- Butter
- Powdered Sugar - Dixie Crystal Sugar
- Almond Extract Paste from Taylor and Colledge
- Milk
I have loved using Extract Pastes from Taylor and Colledge. The paste is smooth and rich in flavor and very easy to use in recipes. I find the flavors to be bold and perfect to enhance each recipe.
Dixie Crystal Sugar is the best I've used. I truly love this sugar company and have enjoyed using the Powdered Sugar in this recipe as well as their fine white sugar and soft brown sugar too.
Supplies Needed
This recipe can be made using a hand mixer, however I prefer to use a large stand mixer so I am hands free. I also feel it gives a better whip to the ingredients are they are creaming.
How to Best use Almond Icing
Truly the possibilities are endless, but generally a good Buttercream Frosting is used on layer cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc. Using an Almond Frosting on an Almond cake recipe or an Almond Cream Cake is also fantastic too
Softened Butter
I recommend allowing butter to soften on the counter for about 90 minutes to room temperature. Creaming softened butter will yield a much smoother frosting.
Vanilla Frosting with Almond Extract is a rich and delicious frosting recipe. It's fun to top on an almond cookie, or even a cupcake. But don't hesitate to use this recipe on my Easy Cinnamon Roll Recipe. It's also fun to garnish with some almond slivers too.
How to make Buttercream Almond Frosting
Cream together softened butter and cream cheese until smooth. Softened cream cheese will blend nicely with butter giving you a smooth and creamy base for this almond icing recipe.

Add Almond extract or Almond Paste and cream until combined. Then slowly add powdered sugar one cup at a time allowing all the confectioners sugar to blend together. I like to use a medium speed on the mixer.
Add milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Frosting that is too thick will not spread well or pipe through a piping tip. Frosting that is too thin will not hold is shape either.
How to fill a Piping Bag
I love using piping bags but in a pinch you can also use a larger ziploc bag. Snip off the corner of the bag and place piping tip.

Roll down the top of the bag which makes it easier to fill and allows the top of the bag to not be covered in frosting. Trust me here, you will want the top of the bag clean and free from frosting.
Then place the bag in a tall drinking glass. This will hold the bag upright and makes it easier to fill.
Using a silicone spatula carefully take a scoop of frosting and place it into the bag filling the bag. A little shake will help settle the frosting to the bottom and fill the tip.

How to make a Rosette on a Cupcake or Cookie
Making rosettes are my favorite. It's quick and simple. You will need a large star tip for best results. Holding the bag upright at a 90 degree angle, start in the center of the cupcake or cookie. Begin by creating a swirl and continuing the swirl to the outer edge.
Taper the end by releasing pressure from the piping bag and pulling the frosting in the swirl motion.

How to Store Almond Butter Cream Frosting
Buttercream Frosting can be made and stored in refrigerator 2 weeks in advance. It's wonderful to make and have on hand. Before using allow frosting to come to room temperature by sitting on counter. I then like to whip frosting for 1-2 minutes and bring life back into the frosting.
Can Buttercream Frosting be Frozen?
You can freeze Buttercream Frosting for up to 3 months. Before using allow frosting to come to room temperature on the counter. And always whip frosting before using.
