I'm so excited to show you how I made a Baby Diaper Cake! It's really fun to make and easy too! I am not a crafty person, trust me. So I wanted to make a Safari Diaper Cake for my Daughter in Law Baby Shower to celebrate my new grand baby. I'm going to be a Grammie and I'm SO EXCITED!

Her nursery theme is Safari Animals, too cute right? I thought a Baby Diaper Cake would be a fun display for the Baby Shower as well as to place in her nursery. And I was right. She LOVED the cake and gift.
Of course you could change the theme to match what works best for you, but making the 3 tier cake is really simple and I'm going to show you step by step so you can make a perfect Baby Diaper Cake too.

It took me about 75 minutes to make this cake while shooting photos and taking notes. It can easily be made in less than 45 mins for a non crafty person.

Diaper Cake Tutorial
Clear your work space and get your supplies ready so you can easily put this together. The bottom layer is the largest but uses the least amount of diapers. Shock I know! I like to hide a box of wipes in the middle for the unsuspecting new mom. You can never have enough wipes.
I used 29 diapers in the bottom layer with a package of wipes and places a few diapers on top of the the wipes as a filler to make the wipes level with the diapers.

Bottom Layer Baby Diaper Cake ~ Approximately 29 Diapers
- Place large rubber band around Wipe Package. If rubber band is thin, I like to use 2 rubber bands.
- Lay 10 diapers out flat overlapping each other then carefully take all 10 diapers and place around the long side of the wipes using the rubber band to hold into place
- Repeat: lay 10 diapers out flat overlapping each other and tuck on the opposite side around the wipes using the rubber band to hold into place.
- Use remaining diapers to tuck into circle filling in gaps.
- Place 3-5 diapers on top of wipes making cake level to diapers.
- Choose ribbon and measure around cake. Cut Ribbon 1 in larger than cake circumference. I like to use 2 ribbons and overlay the ribbons. They will be approximately 36 inches each.
- Wrap ribbon around cake and use a Glue Gun to secure closure in front. Make sure ribbon is pulled tight.
- Add Embellishment to cake front and secure using glue gun

Middle Layer Diaper Baby Cake ~ Approximately 50 Diapers
- Roll Diapers and secure with small rubber band. I like to use small hair rubber bands. They work perfectly.
- To Roll Diapers start at the open end and roll to the bottom of the diaper. It will give you a nice clean roll.
- Once all diapers are rolled take 9-12 and put a large Rubber Band around. Then begin tucking rolled diapers creating a larger circle until all diapers are used and packed tightly.
- Choose ribbon and measure around cake. Cut Ribbon 1 in larger than cake circumference. I used a single wide ribbon for the middle layer.
- Wrap ribbon around cake and use a Glue Gun to secure closure in front. Make sure ribbon is pulled tight.
- Add Embellishment to cake front and secure using glue gun
- Optional ~ This is a perfect place to roll up wash cloths and tuck in cake or small bottles of lotion, or even tiny baby socks. It's a fun surprise for the Baby Mama to find!

Top Layer Diaper Baby Cake ~ Approximately 32 Diapers
- Lay 10 diapers out flat overlapping each other then carefully take all 10 diapers and place around. This will create a half circle.
- Duplicate this by laying 10 diapers out flat, overlapping each other and carefully take diapers and add to opposite side of grouped diapers and secure in rubber band.
- Add 5+ more diapers to fill in gaps leaving an empty circle in the middle of the diapers.
- Lay out remaining diapers flat and overlapping and roll up. Place roll in the middle of your diaper circle to fill in the hole.
- Choose ribbon and measure around cake. Cut Ribbon 1 in larger than cake circumference. I used 2 coordinating ribbons for top layer
- Wrap ribbons around cake and use a Glue Gun to secure closure in front. Make sure ribbon is pulled tight.
- Add Embellishment to cake front and secure using glue gun

Assemble Baby Diaper Cake
Assembling the 3 tiers is easy and can be done in a number of ways. I used an empty paper towel roll and made a place for it in the middle and top tier to keep these two together. It's hidden nicely in the cake.
You can also hide a bottle of Sparkling Apple Cider for the parents if you wish too. Super fun idea.
I placed the cake on a 12in cardboard round cake cutout. I found this at Walmart on the Cake Decorating Isle by the Party Supplies. They were inexpensive.

Diaper Cake Top
For my Safari Diaper Cake I choose a Giraffe Lovie. You could also use a stuffed animal placed on top. Use something fun and memorial that the baby will love or can be used in the Nursery for the mom. Practical is best!

I had SO MUCH FUN making this Safari Diaper Cake and let me tell you, it was a hit at the shower too. A perfect display piece that everyone took note of. I was super pleased with how it turned out.
The Safari Animal embellishments on the front of the cake I found at Hobby Lobby are made of wood. We plan to put them on a picture frame for the nursery of the baby later. So it will be super fun to have them used in other ways once the cake has been taken apart.
How many Diapers do you need for a Diaper Cake?
I used 116 Diapers, 1 box of Luvs Diapers and added a package of Wipes in the center of the bottom layer.
How much does it cost to make a Diaper Cake
Diaper Cakes can be simple or elaborate. This cake cost about $45. Box of Diapers $22, Ribbons $6, Embellishments $4, Lovie Cake Top $6, Wipes $3, Misc Supplies $4.
What Diapers are Best for a Diaper Cake?
I used Luvs and I love the green and purple color added by the print on the diapers. Pampers Saddlers are all White and a favorite brand to use when making a Diaper Cake.
Can you use the Diapers from a Diaper Cake?
YES! It's a display cake of course, but the diapers can be used and should be use by the new parents for their sweet little baby.
How do you put Toys on a Diaper Cake?
Adding Toys or other fun baby items can be done a number of ways. Tie ribbons with toys attached to cake, tuck toys, lotion, washcloths etc inside of each layer as a hidden surprise.
How do you put Ribbon on a Diaper Cake?

It's best to first wrap the ribbon around the cake to measure where you need to cut the ribbon. Make sure you have an inch to overlap. If you are using 2 ribbons lay the ribbons on a flat surface and use double sided tape or a small dot of hot glue to tack together. Wrap the ribbon around each tier so that it hides the rubber bands holding the cake together. Pull the ribbon tightly so that the two ends overlap slightly and secure with hot glue.
